F-4E Phantom II: 50 Years of Service in Turkey

Turkey recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the F-4E Phantom II’s service with the Turkish Air Force. The event took place at Eskişehir Air Base. The celebration highlighted the aircraft’s enduring legacy. It underscored its pivotal role in Turkish airpower. The aircraft’s significant contributions to national defense were also celebrated over the last five decades.

Central to the celebration was F-4E serial number 77-0303, adorned in a striking red and black anniversary scheme. The jet’s upper surfaces featured a large Turkish flag, while its belly proudly displayed the iconic “Spook” character—a symbol cherished by the global Phantom community since the late 1950s. This stunning design highlighted the Phantom’s unique place in aviation history and its special significance in Turkish military heritage.

One of the event’s highlights occurred on Saturday, October 16th, when the anniversary jet and another standard-painted F-4E performed dramatic high- and low-speed passes over a nearby river valley. This exhilarating display showcased the F-4E’s raw power and agility, leaving photographers and onlookers in awe. It was a fitting tribute to an aircraft renowned for its high-performance capabilities and Cold War-era charisma.

On Sunday, 17th October 17, once again the specially painted anniversary jet, took to the skies as part of a four-ship formation, making multiple fly-pasts over Eskişehir Air Base. Meanwhile, another six F-4Es taxied from hardened aircraft shelters to the opposite end of the runway. Once the four-ship formation landed, all 10 aircraft joined together on the ground to perform an **elephant walk**. This exercise, typically conducted to demonstrate a force’s readiness for major contingencies, also served as a commemorative tribute to the Phantom’s remarkable service history. The sight of the lined-up jets symbolized the enduring strength, precision, and operational readiness of the Turkish Air Force.
