On January 9, 2025, the sixth submarine of Project 75 (Scorpene class), INS Vaghsheer, was delivered to the Indian Navy.
As stated, following the completion of the ship’s required sea testing, the delivery ceremony was held. Launched in April 2022, the submarine began sea trials in December 2023.
The submarine was built by French constructor Naval Group in partnership with Indian shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).
MDL stated that the company has fulfilled all of the contractual deliveries for the P75 project with the delivery of Vaghsheer.
Naval Group created the 2000-ton conventional-propulsion submarine Scorpene for a variety of uses, including intelligence collection, long-range strikes, surface vessel combat, anti-submarine warfare, and special operations.
The P75 program’s six submarines, sometimes referred to as the Kalvari class, are outfitted with Indian-made machinery. In keeping with the Indian government’s “Make in India” program, MDL has effectively incorporated the technology transfer from Naval Group. The units are roughly 12.3 meters in height and 67.5 meters in length. The constantly magnetized propulsion motor is powered by 360 battery cells, each weighing 750 kg.
The INS Kalvari, the batch’s first submarine, was put into service in December 2017, followed by the INS Khanderi in September 2019, and the INS Karanj in March 2021.
January 2023 saw the commissioning of INS Vagir, the fifth submarine in this class.
