The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) inked two contracts on March 28, 2025, for the provision of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH), Prachand, as well as related equipment and training, valued at USD 7.3 billion (Rs 62,700 crore).
In the first contract, the Bharatiya Vayu Sena (IAF, Indian Air Force) will receive 66 LCH Prachand light attack helicopters, while in the second contract, the Indian Army will receive 90 LCH Prachand helicopters.
HAL had manufactured 15 limited-series LCH units before this deal, 10 for the IAF and 5 for the Army. HAL will start serial production under the new agreement, with the goal of delivering all 156 helicopters in five to six years.
The contracts will greatly improve the Armed Forces’ ability to fight, especially in high-altitude areas. With the ability to operate at altitudes above 5,000 meters, the LCH is India’s first combat helicopter that was built and developed domestically.
