First S-80 submarine for the Spanish Navy is inching closer to entering service.

Navantia, a Spanish shipbuilder, has reported on its social media pages that mooring trials for the first Armada Española (Spanish Navy) S-80 Plus-class submarine Isaac Peral (S-81) will begin soon, putting the submarine one step closer to entering service.

The tests, according to the Navantia, are crucial safety milestones that will help validate the operation of all systems. The trials will begin after the vessel has passed the first five safety inspections, which include starting the diesel generators and charging the batteries.

The submarine’s launching ceremony, the first of four new air-independent propulsion (AIP) S-80 submarines being built for the Spanish Navy, took place in April of last year.
