The US State Department has decided to support a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to South Korea of 18 Boeing CH-47F Chinook helicopters and associated hardware.
On December 6th, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) submitted the necessary certification to Congress informing them of this potential sale. The Republic of Korea (RoK) sought to purchase 18 CH-47F helicopters and 42 T55-GA-714A engines early in 2022, according to the State Department. These six engines will be utilized as backups.
According to the US State Department, the proposed sale is worth USD1.5 billion.
South Korea aims to buy the helicopters for the army, it was reported in July. The CH-47F International Chinooks are meant to replace the army’s fleet of deteriorating CH-47D Chinooks. The purchases are being made as part of Seoul’s “Heavy Utility Helicopter-II (HUH-II) project,” according to information provided to Janes by South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
